Matthew Rand replied to Marguerite Maria Rivas's discussion Summer Reading? in the group Writers
"Besides the technical text I read, I have been reading the Life of Washington by Parson Weems, from which comes the famous tale of George Washington and the Cherry Tree. I enjoy the highly laudatory tone and rhetorical flourish in the book."

Dan Icolari replied to Marguerite Maria Rivas's discussion Summer Reading? in the group Writers
"I'm an excruciatingly slow reader, made even slower--if we're talking about printed materials--by the fact that I now do so much of my reading online. First, a caveat: I read very little fiction. And what fiction I read tends to take the…"

"Thanks for the McCullough recommendation. I missed John Adams, but wanted to read it. There was one about Abigail Adams that I read a few years back that I enjoyed, so I'll check out the Adams book. I am a grazer, too, and generally have…"

Mike V replied to Marguerite Maria Rivas's discussion Summer Reading? in the group Writers
"I strongly recommend JOHN ADAMS by David McCullough. I found it at my mom's house a few years ago, picked it up, and found it riveting. the first 100 pages or so is kind of slow, but it really picks up. it is amazing what people went through to…"

Profile Information

About Me:
I am a poet, widely regarded as the de facto Poet Laureate of Staten Island. Also a member of the performance collective/impossible-to-define-band Elektromotif, I do performances, solo readings, and give workshops. I am also a professor of English at BMCC in Tribeca where I teach creative writing and literature.

I've won five grants/awards from COAHSI over the past ten years, including a Summerfest in 2008. I've also won other awards and residency scholarships nationally. This really helped me to keep going during particularly difficult times in my life and in my writing career.

My poetry has been published in literary magazines and journals. My scholarly work/literary criticism has also been published in journals and anthologies. I wrote an encyclopedia article on Staten Island poet, Edwin Markham. My chapbook, Poetry Cannot Save You, was published in 2003 with a second printing in 2005.

Much of my work is related to Staten Island in some way, whether as subject or inspiration. I also do historical research on Staten Island and write poems based on that research. My doctoral dissertation was, in part, based on some of my geological, historical, and ethnographic research related to the Island.

I volunteer for A Room of Her Own Foundation which supports women writers through their grants, awards, and retreat programs. I maintain a MySpace page for AROHO. All women writers should check them out. They saved my writing life.
Interest:
Writing, literature, music, spoken-word performances, amateur photography, nature, Staten Island history and folklore.
My Favorite Music
Impossible to pin down. I wrote down the last ten songs that shuffled along on my iPod. Here are a few: Breakable by Ingrid Michaelson,Six Appeal by Charlie Christian, Sugar Magnolia by the Dead, Muddy Waters by Bessie Smith, something from Beethoven's 9th symphony, and Did I Shave My Legs for This? by Deana Carter.

I have pretty varied musical tastes. Shuffle function was made for someone like me!

About My Portrait

My main photo is by Willie Chu. I tried uploading it in different size formats, but the top of my head is still cut off. With that in mind, I thought I'd post one of my favorite quotes about poetry to accompany my picture:

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.
Emily Dickinson

The South Shore: Growing Up in a Lily Cup House

http://www.silive.com/southshore/index.ssf/2009/03/a_look_at_life_in_a_lily_cup_h.html

The above should be a link to a story that was in the South Shore section of the Advance about what it was like to grow up in Huguenot in a Lily Cup house. Don't know what that is? Take a look at the article. If you weren't around in the 60's or before, it may give you a snapshot… Continue
