Dan Icolari commented on Kenneth Paul Media's blog post Island Arts Scene 6
"I was interested in hearing Jenna Lucente discuss her process, so many thanks to Ginger Shulick and Island Arts Scene for that. Now the 'but': I had to strain to make sense of Lucente's comments over that annoying music track.…"

Dan Icolari replied to Marguerite Maria Rivas's discussion Summer Reading? in the group Writers
"I'm an excruciatingly slow reader, made even slower--if we're talking about printed materials--by the fact that I now do so much of my reading online. First, a caveat: I read very little fiction. And what fiction I read tends to take the…"

Profile Information

About Me:
Former editorial services worker, news feature writer and advertising/marketing/ branding agency writer. My last agency boss described me as a journeyman writer, though my official title was senior writer. When I asked him to define that, he said that he thought of me as a writer whose resumé should read, "You got it, I write it."

Married to Ellen, father of Evan and Garth, grandfather of Jacob, Rachel and Sophia. Founding member, St. George Civic Assn., Preservation League of Staten Island; former member, Community Board 1, original and currently-organizing St. George Food Co-op. I'm a volunteer book cleaner and shelver two days a week at the Every Thing Goes Book Café and Neighborhood Stage in Tompkinsville.

Now publish WALKING IS TRANSPORTATION (walkingistransportation.typepad.com), a blog whose original topic was walking and transportation policy but has since opened the door much wider, to include lots of highly opinionated commentary on art (including architecture and design), politics and culture.

My work/source of income is renting apartments in the big old house I and my family have lived in since 1987 (we lived in a smaller house across the street for nine years before that). With my wife Ellen, I take care of our soon-to-be two-year-old granddaughter, Sophia, two days each week, which is work but also a great joy to us.
Interest:
I think the economic downturn that became impossible to deny by the fall of 2008 (now slowing, reversing or continuing, depending on who you read) gives artists the opportunity to project a content-filled alternative to real estate industry-created fantasies about what constitutes neighborhood, community and place--fantasies that erode history and identity and replace them with marketing concepts like 'Downtown Staten Island.'
My Favorite Movies
The Killing (Kubrick), Chinatown, 13 Conversations About One Thing, To Have and Have Not, La Strada, 1900
My Favorite Music
Jazz, pretty much from bebop on. Favorite instrument: Tenor saxophone. Favorite players: Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane
