Taking pictures of pets can be difficult. They don't want to sit still. They don't listen to instruction. Basically, you are trying to capture a moment, that one second that they are looking at you or not.
Get in close. Most pets move around and it becomes difficult to get a close picture. But the results are fantastic. Detail and personality will come out. If you can’t get close, try a zoom l

Don’t let other people distract the pet. When shooting a pet have one person call the pets name. Too many times I have shot a dog and both owners were calling its name confusing the dog. It is actually best to tell the pet owners to stand back and let you handle it. A squeaky toy is good. You must instruct. Have the owner, (1 person) stand behind you and squeak the toy. Then you must be ready to capture the shot. The pet will look, but only for a moment.

Capturing them unaware is always fun

Natural lighting is the best. When you use a flash you most often get red eye. Try to get as much natural light as you can.
