SUMMARY:2010 \"housed\" exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Alice Austen House Museum is pleased to announce its 2
010 summer exhibition, Housed. This group show marks the curatorial de
but of artists, Joseph Maida and Katie Murray.\n\n\nHoused draws from
Maida and Murray’s ongoing dialog with fellow photographers and vide
o artists who explore fresh approaches to the subject matter of home.
The individuals included in this exhibition are successors to a genera
tion of American artists whose photographs interpret social, cultural,
and political events through the restaging of personal occurrences in
suburban living rooms and backyards. While this previous generation d
epicts the literal stage and accompanying personal narratives of domes
tic life in their photographs, the artists in Housed present a more an
alytical approach to the American home through both still images and v
ideos. Housed contextualizes the works of 13 living artists by exhibit
ing them, along side the work of Victorian photographer, Alice Austen,
in her historic home on Staten Island.\n\n\nHoused includes Kathryn P
arker Almanas, Alice Austen, David Deutsch, Matt Ducklo, Benjamin Dona
ldson, Kyle Ganson, Peter Garfield, Christopher Miner, Catherine Opie,
Abby Robinson, Victoria Sambunaris, Peter Stanglmayr, Penelope Umbric
o, and Jessica Watson.\n\n\nThis exhibition is accompanied by a critic
al essay, “ A Guided Tour,” written by Susan Bright and made possi
ble by the generous support of Dear Dave Magazine and the School of Vi
sual Arts. Housed will run from July 1 – September 6, 2010. A recept
ion for the show will be held on Sunday, July 11, 2010 from 2-6 pm. Fo
